Top 5 Wednesday March 15th- Books that Betrayed Me

Hello! So, I was going really well with actually getting my T5W posts up on a Wednesday and today, well… it’s Thursday! But that’s okay because you guys will read my fabulous writing any day of the week, am I right? (I hope I’m right).

Anyway, today I’m bringing you another Top 5 Wednesday post (on a Thursday), and today’s topic is ‘Books (or Characters) You Felt Betrayed By’. Not going to lie, this topic was HARD!

Because there are so many ways to interpret it. Like, it could be a book that just overall disappointed you, although betray and disappoint are different, or it could be a book that you absolutely loved but some moments were absolute torture. Or even characters that you felt super betrayed by.

And just when I thought I had figured out the books I was going to use, I realized that they were the ones I included in Monday’s post ‘Books that made me Ugly Cry’. It turns out that the moments that made me cry in these books are the moments I felt the book betrayed me, because of how much they broke my heart.

So, here I am, coming up with a completely different set of books that I’ve put in the ‘Time Out Zone’, using a combination of my different interpretations of the topic.

Let’s leave this ridiculously long intro behind and actually get into the post because I’m exhausted and I don’t even know if I’m making sense. I hope I am. Also, this post will most likely contain spoilers about all of these books, so skip ahead if you haven’t read the book.

Empire of Storms by Sarah J Maas

Now, before you think this book disappointed me, trust me it didn’t I loved everything about this amazing book, but THAT ENDING! It was torture!!!

And even though the ending finished up the book in an amazingly cruel cliffhanger, it pulled at my heart strings in so many ways. I felt like, after all I’ve been through with the characters, they deserve to be happy. I deserve to be happy. So it betrayed me by leaving all of the characters pretty wiped out, one in an iron coffin, several angry at each other, and one having to go searching for the person who was his mate all along. It was pretty brutal (and yes, I know Feysand got split up as well, but they are both safe, it was part of a plan and they can still communicate. Rowaelin have none of that going for them).

  

Allegiant by Veronica Roth

This one I actually did mention in Monday’s post and unlike, Empire of Storms it doesn’t come under the good type of betrayal. I was really disappointed by this book. Forget Tris dying, which had me sobbing heaps, the plotline felt really pointless and the characters were constantly frustrating me. Tris’ death, I also think wasn’t exactly necessary, although it did show that the heroes don’t always survive in war, it felt like it was added for dramatic effect. The more distance I put between the time I read this series, I realize just how much this book brought the rest of the series down, and all the flaws it contains. To be honest though, I don’t really read dystopian any more, so I’m not sure if I would even enjoy the first two books, which were really good.

Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

I absolutely loved the first Red Queen book (I haven’t read King’s Cage yet), but similarly to Empire of Storms, that ending was torture in the best possible way. Even though there were some tiny signs of Maven’s betrayal I didn’t really see it coming at all and it was such a shock. Part of me still hopes that he’ll pull a “Once Upon a Time”, and be redeemed and go back to be being the Maven I fell in love with, but I doubt that will happen.

Plus, he makes such a good bad guy…

 

Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo

This was another book that I loved with all my heart and soul and the story/writing was brilliant, but there were some moments that absolutely crushed my heart. All of their back-stories are so tragic and I wanted to give the gang a huge bear hug (except Kaz, I wouldn’t do that to him). I also think I felt betrayed by this one because it’s the last book in the series. Even though it finished up amazingly, I spent so much time getting invested in these characters to only get two books? Not fair, I need more! I’m secretly hoping that Leigh Bardugo will write a set of novellas showing the characters doing all the things they planned to do at the end of Crooked Kingdom.

City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

City of Bones was the book that made me fall in love with Cassandra Clare and her amazing Shadowhunter world, but the plot twist at the end absolutely ruined me. This book hooked me in and got me invested, then suddenly told me that Jace and Clary were siblings? No way. That definitely left me shocked for a while. Of course, it turns out all right in the end, but the characters (and me), went through a lot of ups and downs to get there. Now I’ve just got to go through it with Emma and Julian (anybody else excited for Lord of Shadows?).

 

That’s it for today’s Top 5 Wednesday, I apologize for my ridiculously long intro and I hope I wasn’t too incoherent. I’m pretty proud of myself for coming up with all of these answers, as I wanted to make it more about the books that gave me good heartbreak, instead of the books I was just disappointed in.
